The meeting was called to order at 7:23 PM.
Present: Peter Bloznalis, Mike Brodeur, Art DiGregorio, Dave Dorenzo, Mark Fitzgerald, Brian Mazar, Don Morin, Ken Perregaux, Gene Peterman, Walt Ramsey, Dave Rizzo, Gordon Scott, Rob Walters.
The Minutes from the February 5, 2002 Meeting were read and approved.
Rob Walters, MUYSA Registrar, reported that spring registration was currently at 529 players. Rob is still chasing down six (6) outstanding Kids Safe forms for new coaches at the U6 & U8 levels.
Don Morin, MAYS (Midland Area Youth Soccer) Coordinator, reminded everyone that schedules and booklets for the spring season will be ready on March 24th. There was a general discussion about maps, schedules, conflicts, referees and out of town player registration.
Don Morin reported that Joe Flaherty had been called to active duty for the National Guard and that he will assume Joe’s role as U8 Boys coordinator and Hood Field coordinator for the spring season.
Rob Walters reported that the player fee from Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) has increased to $7.50 - $8.00 per player retroactive to last fall.
Brian Mazar, MUYSA President, reminded all coordinators and coaches to bring two (2) copies of team rosters and player pass cards to each game. He also suggested that the coaches keep the player pass cards not the players.
Brian Mazar stated that the referee class “Grade 11” (for U8 & U10 Refereeing) scheduled for Saturday, March 16th, 2002 to be held at the Mendon Senior Center between the hours of 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM is currently full (30 students). A waiting list will be started if needed.
The By-Law Committee is currently formulating and gathering information. Ken Perregaux and Artie DiGregorio will co-chair the Committee. Other members are Don Morin, Mike Brodeur and John Patrick.
Jill Lawson reported that the “F license” coach’s clinic that has been scheduled for Saturday, March 23rd, 2002 from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM has twenty (20) registered coaches. All present thanked Jill for making the telephone calls to individuals who were interested at coaching.
Mike Brodeur, MUYSA Educational Director (ED), gave an update on the U6 program for this spring. He mentioned that he will be incorporating some specific changes to the “skills” program established this past fall with Gary Crompton. Mike reported that he attended the Coaches Symposium held at Wheaton College along with Brian Mazar and Mark Fitzgerald. Mike will make recommendations to MUYSA such as continuing education, goal tending programs and vacation clinics.
There was a general discussion about club reimbursements for coaches “D License” classes (approximately $300 cost). It was decided that any coach requesting such a reimbursement would need to contact the current ED with a formal request. The ED would then make a recommendation to MUYSA officers and then a club vote would follow.
Brian Mazar mentioned that there were a few slots available for the Miscoe Hill lower gym. Please contact Brian to schedule a practice time.
Mark Fitzgerald, MUYSA Secretary, reported that alternate dates for Soccer 101 camp have been offered by Gary Crompton due to a conflict with another local camp program. Walt Ramsey made a motion to change the Soccer 101 camp date to July 29th - August 2nd , 2002. The motion was seconded by Don Morin. The motion carried unanimously.
Brian Mazar announced that a volunteer was needed to follow through on the Colonial Field irrigation in the absence of Joe Flaherty as he was called to duty for the National Guard. Anyone interested please contact Brian. It was noted that the shed at Colonial Field was in need of some repairs.
Brian Mazar reminded everyone that field use decisions, whether it was for practice or games, is up to the field coordinators. Brian noted that games decisions need to be made well in advance so that traveling teams can be notified.
Mark Fitzgerald made a motion that MUYSA donate up to $10,000 to the West River Street soccer fields project only if the town appropriates and spends $50,000 first. Don Morin seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.
Brian Mazar requested that some Mendon residents volunteer to spearhead the possibility of having some soccer fields designated at the town owned Kelly Field land. Please contact Brian if anyone is interested.
Brian Mazar tabled the Middle School soccer discussion until next meeting.
Dave Dorenzo distributed a Scholarship Committee Guidelines memo for all to review. After a general discussion Dave made a motion to accept the proposed Scholarship Committee Guidelines as presented. Art DiGregorio seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously. Brian Mazar requested that a recommendation by the Scholarship Committee be made after review of all applicants.
Don Morin announced that he has all the necessary equipment for the spring season. Coordinators need to set up a time with Don to pick up specific items.
Ken Perregaux, Art DiGregorio and Mark Fitzgerald made presentations for new uniforms for the fall of 2002. After a general discussion Ken Perregaux made a motion to accept the uniform proposal submitted by POPTOPS for the U6 - U16 age groups as presented by Mark Fitzgerald. Brian Mazar seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously. Mark will coordinate with the Soccer Spot (formerly the Soccer Post) in Milford.
Mark Fitzgerald made a presentation for coaches wind shirts. The matter was tabled for future discussion.
Gene Peterman will order additional patches for teams competing in tournaments this spring. Please see Gene to place your team orders.
The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 2nd, at 7:15 PM at the Rose Garden in Upton.
